Most small businesses start on Meta by tapping “Boost” on an Instagram post. They spend a little, get likes and reach, and cannot tell whether anything sold. Meta works very well for small businesses; boosting is just the least controllable version of it.
When Meta comes before Google
If people search for what you sell, Google usually performs first. Meta comes first when demand has to be created: a new product, an impulse buy, something easier to understand by seeing it. See Google Ads vs. Meta Ads.
Step 1: the objective
Of Meta’s six objectives, pick the one closest to the sale that you can measure: Sales if you sell online with the pixel tracking purchases; Leads if you collect contacts (if they come cheap and never buy, see Meta Ads lead quality); Engagement with a messaging destination if you sell over WhatsApp, often the best option in Latin America (see click-to-WhatsApp ads). Awareness and Traffic optimize toward viewers and clickers, rarely worth it on a small budget.
Step 2: targeting
Detailed targeting matters much less than it used to. Set the right location (a radius or the cities you serve), restrict age only for real reasons, and keep interests few or none. Let the ad do the filtering: price, area, who it is for.
Step 3: few ad sets, several ads
Meta treats an ad set as out of learning after roughly 50 optimization events in seven days. Split a small budget across five ad sets and none gets there. One campaign, one ad set, three to five genuinely different ads; every two or three weeks, switch off losers and add new ones. See creative testing and creative fatigue.
Step 4: creative does most of the work
Show the product or the result, not the logo. Short video or real photos often beat polished design (see UGC vs brand creative). Put price and terms in the ad, and use vertical formats for Stories and Reels.
Step 5: measure
Install the Meta pixel with the events that matter, add the Conversions API if your store platform supports it, and keep a sheet of where each sale came from if you sell over WhatsApp or in store. For WhatsApp clicks on your site, see how to track WhatsApp clicks in GA4 and Google Ads.
How much to spend
Enough for your one ad set to gather results weekly. If the Sales objective cannot get there, step down to messages or leads, which have more volume, and measure the sale outside Meta. For where this fits in a small business plan, see small business digital marketing: where to start.
