For most businesses in Latin America that sell over WhatsApp, the green button on the site is the most important conversion, and it is rarely tracked. Google Ads optimizes toward visits, GA4 shows sessions, and nobody knows which campaign brought the chats.

Before you start

You need Google Tag Manager with the Google tag (GA4) already working, edit access to GA4 and Google Ads with the accounts linked, and to know what your button is: a plain link to wa.me/... or api.whatsapp.com/send?..., or a third-party widget.

Step 1: the trigger in Tag Manager

  1. Enable the built-in Click variables (including Click URL).
  2. Create a Click - Just Links trigger firing on some link clicks where Click URL matches RegEx wa\.me|api\.whatsapp\.com.
  3. Test in Preview mode.

Floating widgets sometimes live in an iframe Tag Manager cannot see. Check whether the widget pushes a dataLayer event you can use as a Custom Event trigger; if not, replace it with your own link.

Step 2: the GA4 event

Create a Google Analytics: GA4 Event tag named click_whatsapp, with a link_url parameter from Click URL and, if you have several buttons, a location parameter. Fire it on the Step 1 trigger and publish. When the event appears in GA4, mark it as a key event (what GA4 used to call a conversion) under Admin > Events.

Step 3: the Google Ads conversion

Choose one path to avoid double counting:

  • Import from GA4: create a conversion action imported from Google Analytics 4 and select the key event.
  • Google Ads conversion tag in Tag Manager: create the action in Google Ads and a Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag with the same trigger. Uses Google Ads attribution and usually reports faster.

Set it as primary if the chat is your main business action, secondary if you already have a better conversion such as a purchase.

Step 4: verify

Preview mode shows both tags firing once per click; GA4 realtime shows click_whatsapp; Google Ads moves from “No recent conversions” to “Recording conversions” within a day or two of paid traffic. GA4 and Google Ads will not match exactly; see attribution models compared.

What a click does not tell you

A click is the intent to message. Some people open the chat and send nothing, and only some who write will buy. To close that gap: a different pre-filled message per page or campaign (the link can carry ?text=...), labels in WhatsApp Business by source plus a “Sale” label, and for precision, a reference code in the pre-filled message so sales can later be uploaded to Google Ads as offline conversions.

The Meta version of this problem is in click-to-WhatsApp ads, and the next step once conversions are tracked is Google Ads lead quality. If you want this set up properly once, tracking and attribution is part of what I do.
