In Latin America, sales happen on WhatsApp. Services, appointments, high-ticket products, almost anything that needs a question before payment. That is why Meta ads that open a WhatsApp chat usually beat lead forms in the region.
It is also why they are the worst-measured format. The platform tells you how many conversations started. It does not tell you how many became sales. And if you optimize for the metric it shows, the campaign learns to find people who message a lot, who are not the same people who buy.
Setup
In Ads Manager, WhatsApp is available as a destination under several objectives. The common ones:
- Engagement, with a messaging destination. Optimizes for conversations started. The usual start.
- Sales, with WhatsApp as destination. Worth it once you can send purchase events back to Meta.
You need a WhatsApp Business account connected to the business’s Facebook Page. The free WhatsApp Business app is enough to start.
What almost always gets set up wrong
The pre-filled message. If it says “Hi, I’d like more information”, you get hundreds of identical chats with no context and no way to tell which ad they came from. Write a specific one, different per campaign.
Frequently asked questions. Load the three questions you always get, so they appear when the chat opens.
The ad does not filter. An ad with no price, area or terms generates curiosity chats. If your service starts at a price part of the audience will not pay, say so. Fewer conversations, more sales.
The metric Meta shows, and the one that matters
Meta reports messaging conversations started and cost per conversation. Useful for comparing creative, but not a business result.
Cost per sale = campaign spend ÷ sales that came from that campaign’s chats.
Measuring sales with the WhatsApp Business app
- One label per campaign, applied to each chat (the per-campaign pre-filled message tells you which).
- A “Sale” label when the chat ends in a purchase.
- Weekly, count chats per campaign label and how many also carry “Sale”, next to spend.
You will almost always find that the campaign with the cheapest conversations is not the one that sells best.
Measuring it automatically
At higher volume, the next step is the WhatsApp Business API through a provider (a CRM or customer service platform). Each conversation is logged with its source ad, and you can send purchase events back to Meta via the Conversions API so campaigns optimize toward sales. Same idea as lead quality signals in Google Ads: the platform optimizes toward whatever you call a result.
The bottleneck is not the ad
Someone who messages a business from an ad has usually messaged more than one, and buys from the first that answers well. Before raising budget, check response time, align the ad schedule with when someone can reply, and set up quick replies. A mediocre campaign answered in two minutes beats an excellent one answered in two hours.
When a form beats WhatsApp
- Very high volume, low ticket: nobody can answer hundreds of chats a day one by one.
- You need structured data for a multi-stage sales process.
- B2B with long cycles, where the conversation starts by email or a meeting.
For most local and service businesses in the region, WhatsApp will still convert best. For where it fits in the bigger picture, see small business digital marketing: where to start and entering LatAm.
