Most small businesses start digital marketing in the wrong order. They open an Instagram account, boost a couple of posts, try Google Ads for a week and conclude that “digital does not work for my business”. In almost every case the channel was not the problem. The problem was starting with what costs money before fixing what is free.

This is for the owner of a local business or small company in Latin America with a small budget who wants to know what to do first.

Step 1: be found by people already looking

Before paying for a single click, people are already searching for what you sell: “dentist in Palermo”, “mechanic near me”, “vet open now”. That demand exists; you just need to be there.

Google Business Profile is what shows up in Maps and in the local block of search results. It is free and, for a business with a storefront or a service area, often the cheapest source of customers it will ever have. What makes the difference:

  • The right primary category. It weighs the most for showing up.
  • Real hours, including holidays. A profile that says “open” when you are closed earns bad reviews faster than anything else.
  • Reviews, and replies to reviews. Ask happy customers systematically and answer every review, especially the bad ones.
  • Your own photos. Of the place, the team and finished work. Not stock.
  • A phone and WhatsApp someone answers. Which is the next step.

Step 2: someone has to answer

In Latin America, local sales happen on WhatsApp. A perfect ad that ends in a chat answered six hours later is wasted money: the person already messaged three competitors and bought from the first one who replied.

  • WhatsApp Business, not a personal account. Greeting messages, quick replies, catalog and labels.
  • A response-time target and someone accountable for it during business hours.
  • Quick replies for the five questions you always get: price, area, hours, payment, lead time.

Step 3: know where each customer came from

Ask every new customer how they found you and write it down. Three months of that tells you more than any dashboard. If you have a website, add Google Analytics 4 and track at least clicks to WhatsApp and to the phone. Once you run ads, this stops being optional.

Step 4: only now, pay for ads

If people search for what you sell, start with Google Search ads. Services, professionals, repairs, health, education: almost anything searched with “near me” or a neighborhood name. See Google Ads for local businesses for the setup that avoids paying for clicks from the wrong city.

If what you sell is not searched by name, start with Meta Ads, and in Latin America that usually means click-to-WhatsApp ads.

On a small budget, only one. Splitting little money across two platforms is the fastest way to learn nothing on either. The fuller comparison is in Google Ads vs. Meta Ads.

How much money it takes

Less than agencies usually suggest and more than most owners try. The right number comes from arithmetic: cost per click, clicks per inquiry, inquiries per sale. I walk through it with an example in how much to spend on Google Ads when starting out.

What to leave for later

  • Organic social as a sales channel. It builds trust when someone checks you out; as a main source of customers for a local business, it returns little per hour.
  • Influencers. They can work very well in the region, but without measurement you will not know.
  • Performance Max and automated campaigns. With a small budget and no tracked conversions, they tend to spend where inventory is cheap, not where your customers are. More in Performance Max: when it works.
  • A website redesign. Rarely what holds sales back early on. A simple site that loads fast on a mid-range phone beats a beautiful one that takes eight seconds.

Summary

  1. A complete Google Business Profile with reviews.
  2. WhatsApp Business with someone answering fast.
  3. A simple way to know where each customer came from.
  4. One paid channel, chosen by whether demand already exists.
  5. A calculated budget, not a guessed one.

If you are past these steps, spending on ads every month, and it feels like it returns less than it should, here is how I work with brands.
